Phonics and Early Reading
BackIntent:
Our aim is to lay a solid foundation for literacy skills, nurturing a love for reading from the very start. Through our comprehensive phonics program, we intend to instil confidence and fluency in young learners, equipping them with essential tools for lifelong learning and enjoyment of literature.
Implement:
We implement the teaching of phonics through the Little Wandle phonics program, starting from Reception and continuing through Year 1 and into Year 2 where necassary. With daily 30-minute sessions, we gradually build phonics skills, incorporating interactive activities and weekly reviews to ensure steady progress. Our approach focusses on making learning enjoyable and accessible, fostering active engagement and enthusiasm for reading.
Impact:
The impact of our phonics curriculum is profound. By following the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised expectations, children develop strong reading and spelling abilities, mastering Phase 2 to 5 Grapheme-Phoneme Correspondences (GPCs) with accuracy and confidence.
For those needing extra support, personalised 1:1 or small group sessions are available, ensuring no child is left behind. The Phonics screening check in Year 1 ensures timely intervention, while our home reading program reinforces skills and strengthens family engagement in literacy development.
Through our holistic approach, children emerge as proficient readers, ready to embark on a journey of lifelong learning and literary exploration.
